The Top 10 Most Popular Purebred Dogs According To The American Kennel Club: And A Few Fakes To Watch Out For

This post may contain affiliate links. Please see our disclosure policy for details.

Every year the American Kennel Club (AKC) tracks dog registrations and unveils the most popular breeds. After ruling supreme for 31 years, the Labrador Retriever was knocked out of the #1 position by French Bull Dogs in 2022. For the second year in a row, the “Frenchie”, as they are known, is the top dog. Let’s look at the top 10 dog breeds and celebrate the diversity and charm within the canine kingdom – and also some dogs to steer clear of. Do you have a pooch at home?

1. French Bull Dog: Reigning Supreme

  • Rank: 1
  • Origin: France
  • Temperament: Playful, Smart, Adaptable

For the second consecutive year, the charismatic French Bull Dog claims the coveted top spot, reaffirming its status as America’s darling. Renowned for its endearing bat-like ears and affable demeanor, the French Bull Dog continues to capture hearts across the nation. Read more at the French Bull Dog Club of America.

Please note that due to the breed’s popularity, disreputable breeders have developed “designer colors”, which sell for thousands of dollars, and in fact, many are NOT purebred Frenchies, and also prone to health problems. Please read the next three sections.

Merle “French Bull Dogs” Are Not French Bull Dogs

Merle French Bull Dogs have a mottled appearance, and can have blue eyes. The look appeals to many, so unscrupulous breeders have cross-bred French Bull Dogs with other breeds, such as chihuahuas, to create the merle coat. These are not only not purebred French Bull Dogs, which the breeders say they are (it is actually impossible), but they are charging obscene amounts of money for them, and there are associated health issues, such as blindness, deafness. Please do not support these breeders; do not buy merle French Bull Dogs.

Blue French Bull Dogs

Blue French Bull Dogs have a gray colored coat; it is a result of a mutation that affects the melanin pigment in the hair follicles, resulting in a blue-gray appearance. Due to buyer’s demand, disreputable breeders have exploited this mutation to create blue French Bull Dogs, which are not accepted by the American Kennel Club due to inherent health issues associated with the mutation, such as color dilution alopecia (CDA – dilution color-related hair loss). Please do not support these breeders; do not buy blue French Bull Dogs.

Fad Colors & Textures

Just say no. I

You can find “fluffy” Frenchies, with a curly coat, as well as colors labeled lilac, sable, blue brindle, and many others. These colors and coat textures are not supported by the French Bull Dog’s parent club, the French Bull Dog Club, or the AKC. Breeders of these dogs are disreputable and we caution against purchasing such a dog. They are merely breeding dogs that carry a certain color because they can convince members of the public to pay exorbitant prices for dogs with an unusual appearance. They are driven by profit, not a commitment to produce healthy dogs. Many of these dogs end up in rescue and French Bull Dog lovers are trying to help. Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for food and shelter and to have an emotionally enriching life. When you take a dog into your home, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

Know Your Dog’s Needs

Every breed, and every individual dog, comes with its own physical and emotional needs. Do your research. Do not buy a dog because of the way it looks. Understand that the dog’s genetics can dictate much of its personality. For instance, dogs like Border Collies do best if they have jobs.

Do Your Research

Buying from reputable breeder means that that dog will have support and protection for life. Reputable breeders will take a dog back, at any time, no matter what. Reputable, responsible breeders do not allow their dogs to enter the shelter system. Giving up a dog should never be the plan, but it is an assurance for the well-being of the dog.
